Munising Shipwreck Weekend
July 11 - 13

Attention beginner divers, intermediate divers and nature lovers, Munising is the perfect vacation for you! Pack your dive equipment, throw in some fishing gear, hiking shoes, bike and/or kayaking and head to the U.P. Munising is located on the shores of Lake Superior. Most wrecks are found within shallow to mid-range depths and all are part of the Alger Underwater Preserves. There are several signature wrecks. The Smith Moore, a 230-ft wooded steamer barge that sank in 1889. She is one of the deeper sites, sitting in 100 ft. of water but her deck lies at 85 ft. There is also the Selvick, a tugboat that was intentionally sunk in 1996. Beginner diver will enjoy surveying the pilothouse and the external structure in 40-70ft of water. Intermediate divers can easily penetrate the pilothouse and the stern fantail area. Other wrecks include the Herman Hettler. In 1926, while seeking shelter in the harbor, she slamming into a reef and sank in 30-40ft of water. The boiler sits in 25 ft of water along with part of hull and a field of debris. Here you’ll find mechanical parts, tanks, piping and even a bathtub. Amid these remains is a tree that has been laboratory dated to be over 7900 years old! Why it’s there is a mystery.
Itinerary: Friday: Check into the hotel based on your schedule. Transportation is not included in this trip, however we will help coordinate carpools. If you arrive by 7 p.m., please join us for dinner at a local restaurant. At 8:30 p.m., meet the group for a History of Munising Shipwrecks by our SASS group leader. Learn about the shipwreck you will be diving. Saturday: Dive times 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the new charter boat, Fireball. After a morning of two dives, put on your hiking boots and explore the Picture Rock or one of the many waterfalls in the area. Sunday: Dive times 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then it’s time to head home or extended your vacation. We can help arrange extra hotel nights so that you can continue recreating on the pictures shores of Lake Superior.

Thousand Islands Ontario
Warm Water Diving
Head North Not South!
Where can you find historical shipwrecks bathed in mid-70`F water? Yes, Florida, even the Caribbean, but I’m suggesting a place much closer, the St. Lawrence Seaway. It’s a 9-hour drive to the historical and picturesque town of Brockville, Ontario. Not only are the water temperatures mild but the shipwrecks are also numerous, that we’ve decided to dedicate an entire week of diving here.
St. Lawrence is one of the world’s great rivers. It was a crucial artery for westward migration, commercial goods and troop movement during several wars. Brockville sits at the entrance of what is called 1000 Islands. The name alone describes the maze of navigational hazards that ships faced when traversing the area.
Signatures wrecks include:
Keystorm: This steel freighter was originally built in England in 1908. She was carrying Bituminous coal from New York when she encountered dense fog, and crossed over Outer Scrow Island shoal. She sank within minutes without any loss of life.
Lillie Parsons: Here’s a beach dive for you! There is an anchor sitting on the shore of Sparrow Island. Follow the chain into the water and you’ll run into the bow of a two-masted schooner. The Lillie was built in 1868 and was carrying coal to Brockville. A squall came up and caused the cargo to shift. This resulted in the vessel being pinned to the island where it took on water and eventually capsized and sank.
Robert Gaskin: This vessel was destined to be a shipwreck. The Gaskin is a three-masted wooden barque built in 1863. Thirty some years later, it was converted into a salvage barge. While on a job, salvaging the railroad ferry Armstrong, the Gaskin sank. She was brought up but sank a second time. Now, I would think the crew would re-think their strategy, but no, they continued and the Gaskin sank a third and final time. She now rests in 55 ft – 70 ft. of water. Dive Schedule: For 6 days, you’ll dive freighters, steamers and 18th-centurey barges. Boat dives are planned for four days (2-3 dives/day) with beach diving on Sunday and Wednesday. There are 11 recommended beach dives. Boat dives are on the Seeway Vision, a 47-foot custom-built dive vessel that accommodates groups up to 22 divers. We have reserved the entire boat to assure plenty of space for everyone. This will also allow us to customize the dive schedule. Lunch will be served on board during boat dive days.
Accommodations are at the Comfort Inn in Brockville. They offer complimentary ‘Canadian Continental’ breakfast, which consists of hot and cold cereal, waffles, bagels, toast, etc. An assortment of restaurants is within walking distance and if you haven’t had enough exercise, complimentary YMCA passes are also offered.
Package Includes
6 Nights Accommodations based on double occupancy
4 Days of Boat Diving (2-3 dives/day)
Shore diving on Sunday & Wednesday (2-3 dives/day)
Lunches on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

Cayman Brac
October 5 – 12
 Rick Sass Photo
As soon as you arrive into Brac Reef Beach Resort, kick off your shoes and bask in the beauty of Cayman Brac. Located 86 miles off of Grand Cayman, this less touristy island is perfect for the dive enthusiast looking to escape reality for a little while.
Off its sandy shores are over 50 dive sites with virtually unlimited visibility, little or no currents and water temperatures that average around 82`F. Twelve dives are schedule throughout the week with afternoon and night dives optional. The onsite dive operator is first-class with a modern fleet of specially designed dive boats. The ‘Capt. Keith Tibbetts” wreck dive is a must. This 330-foot Russian frigate was sunk in September 1996 as an artificial reef. Canons are found fore and aft, along with a wheelhouse tower and some penetration is possible. If weather permits, we can head over to Bloody Bay Wall, just 5 miles away, on Little Cayman. Bloody Bay Wall is considered one of this hemisphere’s most pristine sites. Bloody Bay Wall was featured in “Portrait of a Coral Reef”, the largest underwater photographed image ever produced. This portrait was published by National Geographic in 2001and can be viewed at www.bloodybaywall.com.
The Resort is situated on a private beach on the west end of the island. There are 40 beachfront rooms surrounded by tropical gardens. The architecture reflects the quaintness and charm of the Caribbean style. Each room as two double or one king sized bed, patio or balcony, air conditioning and overhead ceiling fans, cable television, and coffee center.
Breakfast and dinners are included in the package. The Palms Restaurant offers dining in a casual atmosphere, with both indoors in air-conditioned comfort or outdoors in an alfresco setting. Meals are served buffet-style with theme dinners featured nightly. Tipsy Turtle is the poolside bar that also serves dinner as well as lunches and specialty tropical drinks.
Cost: $1699
Payment: A $300 non-refundable is necessary to guarantee a space on this trip. Only sixteen spaces are available. Final payment is due no later than 60 days prior to departure. Prices are subject to change due to gas surcharges, changes in government taxes, etc.

· Airfare from Detroit to Cayman Brac via Delta and Cayman Airways
· 8 days / 7 nights ocean view accommodations based on double occupancy
· 12 dives (6 days of two tank dives)

Best of the Bahamas Nekton Liveaboard June 28-July 5
For all of you that miss our old instructors, Tom Thinnes & Chris Reed, then join us on the best of the Bahamas trip. Nekton's northwest vacation itinerary is an excellent way to experience the diversity of Bahamian diving. You'll dive shallow coral gardens, ancient high profile reefs, deep and shallow wrecks, a spectacular mini-wall, and even experience a shark dive! There are also opportunities to venture ashore for excursions in Freeport and Bimini.
Nekton' Pilot has a very ‘unique’ look that provide stable more comfortable rides for those prone to seasickness. The accommodations are deluxe with large cabins, air conditioning, private baths, and large windows for spectacular ocean views.
The vessel departs out of Fort Lauderdale. If you arrive early on Saturday, spend time at the Riverfront where there’s shopping, dining, movies, museums and water taxi rides. At 8 p.m. Nekton pulls from dock and starts the crossing to the Bahamas. After the Captain’s welcome and a boat briefing, grab a drink and head to the top deck. A night crossing to the Bahamas is beautiful; with any luck the stars will outshine the glittering coastline of Florida as it fades from sight.
Sunday morning, after clearing customs, the dives begin at Indian Cay Reef. Typically, you can enjoy 4-5 dives. Monday brings some of Kim’s favorite dives, Mount Olympus and the Sugar Wreck. Sugar Wreck sits in less than 20 ft of water and is as close to diving in an aquarium as we’ve ever seen. The fish life is thick with extremely large, extremely friendly loggerhead turtles. The next day, Theo’s Wreck is excellent; she is a 230-foot freighter that sits in 130 ft of water. If that doesn’t bring enough excitement to the day, then the Shark Junction dive planned for the afternoon will. Had enough diving? Ready for land? Take the optional shore excursion into Port Lucaya for a little shopping of Captain Morgan rum.
Does this sound good so far? Well it’s only the first half of your week of diving. Contact S.A.S.S. for complete information.
Cost: 1795
A $300 deposit is necessary to guarantee space on this boat. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. Passports are required to travel in the Bahamas.
Additional Fees: Per usually, there are a slew of taxes, government fees, and fuel surcharges. Currently they total $209.80 (includes: Bahamian Government charter fee of 4% of the cruise fare, Bahamian Government departure fee of $15 per person, US Passenger vessel excise tax of $3 per person, $15 Port Everglades Port Charge, $5 Port Everglades Port Security Fee, $100 Fuel surcharge) Nitrox is additional at $150/week.
Choose Your Challenge... In West Palm Beach!
August 10 - 15
Lobster Challenge! / Reef Hugger Challenge!
If you’re looking for an economical dive vacation, considering heading to Florida this summer. Our favorite dive location is West Palm Beach. It offers white sandy beaches and excellent diving. The Gulf Stream runs closest to shore, which attracts an impressive array of sea creatures. Nutrient rich waters feed dolphin, sharks, rays, eels, turtles and lobsters. In fact, it’s the lobsters that have determined our timeframe for this trip. The week of August 10-15 is the first full week of Lobster Season so while diving, keep an eye open for dinner.
Take the Challenge!
Lobster Challenge: Swim with turtles, watch for a sleeping nurse shark, but most importantly, catch some ‘bugs’. You’re allowed 6 lobsters/day, that’s a possible 30 lobsters for the week! Many people buy inexpensive Styrofoam coolers and dry ice to bring their catch home. The Lobster Challenge includes everything you will need to be a successful hunter: a specially designed lobster catch bag, metal frame net, measuring gauge and tickle stick. The Florida Lobster License is additional and available at www.fwc.com/license.
Reef Hugger Challenge: If your interest lies more toward watching pretty fish than playing ‘Great White Hunter,” then take this challenge. The week starts with a 1-_ hour seminar on marine life. Learn how to spot and identify Florida’s most common, as well as some unique creatures. Photographer and writer Paul Humann has taken many photos for his popular book series, Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral, right here in Palm Beach such as batfish and stargazers. The marine life will amaze you. To help with the identification process, you’ll also receive a reusable, underwater camera and the Marine Identification FishFlip booklet. Plus, each day you can participate in SASS’ Marine Life Challenge. What a fun way to learn about our ocean. The winner will receive a $25 SASS Gift Card.
MORE ABOUT WEST PALM BEACH
Dive Operation: For over 20 years, we have dove with Jim Abernathy in West Palm Beach. You’ll dive off a custom-designed dive vessel complete with freshwater showers, a bathroom, and cooler for beverages. Choose between 63 cu. ft., 80 cu. ft. and Nitrox tanks. The boat departs every morning at 10a.m. for two dives. We typically return early afternoon leaving plenty of time to explore the topside.
Diving Sites: The reefs and shipwrecks of West Palm range in depths from 30 feet to 130 feet making diving accessible to all levels of divers. Over a dozen shipwrecks can be explored off the coast; the newest is Governor's River Walk Reef, which is actually four shipwrecks at one site. Most dive sites are one to three miles from shore, so you won't have to worry about long boat rides. Turtles: Palm Beach County is also the second largest turtle nesting ground in the world, with three of the five different species using the area beaches to nest. From the elusive Leatherback turtle to the giant Loggerhead, Palm Beach is a favorite dive destination for turtle lovers. After Wednesday’s dives, we’ll head to Loggerhead Marinelife Center for a private tour and learn more about the nesting and the center’s rescue efforts.
Itinerary: After years of diving the area, we have developed a relaxed, totally optional, week of fun. Sunday night: Meet and greet at poolside, 6 p.m. Monday: Dive in the morning, Reef Hugger Seminar in the afternoon.
Tuesday: Dive in the morning then join us at PA Grill for the All-You-Can-Eat Rib Night. Wednesday: Dive in the morning, Loggerhead Marinelife Center tour in the afternoon. Dinner option at the dog races for a cold beer and great burger ($1 entry).
Thursday: Dive in morning. In the evening, walk the waterfront Sunset Celebration Art Show at Sailfish Marine. This is also an excellent place for our last dinner together.

March 17-31, 2009
Join us on our newest exotic diving adventure to the Philippines. After spending two weeks in the Philippines Back in May of 2007, I believe we have found a real hidden treasure! The people are great, the diving is amazing, (kind of a combination of Papau New Guinea and Palau!!) the hotel is pure luxury, and the diving off the beach is incredible for macro photography. Sign up space is limited so get your deposit in as soon as possible 18 spaces (limited by the liveaboard) are available in two different catagories of rooms. This will be first come first serve. Now lets talk about the diving. Diving in the Philippines is for most divers, however there will be some currents, which require you the diver to follow the instructions of the dive guides. The depths are from only a few feet while doing shore dives, to some walls which go beyond anything anyone could dive. Good bouyancy control is a must.
The marine life is why you go to the Philippines. You will see things such as the ornaite pipe fish (above), Frog fish bigger than anywhere else I've been (Below). Schools of thousands of fish of every size and shape. Just about every variety of clown fish, Lion fish (left) and some things we are still trying to identify! The water will be in the low to mid to mid 80's. Visibility will range some, from 50 to 60' at it's worst to 150'+ at it's best.
If you want to add some truely unique dives to your log book, travel with some great people, and experience a part of the world that few will get to, join us. You will be rewarded with a experience of a life time. Never traveled that far before? Even more reason to travel with us, we've been there, know what to expect and can help you thru any rough spots which might occur.
