Megalodon Mania
Trips in search of Megalodon teeth are not uncommon. Popular locations include Venice Beach, Florida, Cooper River in South Carolina and Carolina Beach in North Carolina. Our favorite, by far, is Carolina Beach. Venice typically has smaller teeth and there’s something about the Cooper River with it’s 1ft. visibility and alligators that we’re not diggin’. Carolina Beach diving is warm, clear and minus large-toothed reptiles. Of course, what we lack in alligators is made up for with sharks. New for this year, we’ve added a day of diving with Lemon and Reef sharks that hang around various shipwrecks.
Itinerary: Check into the condo anytime after 4pm on Thursday, July 21st. Your group leader will suggest a dinner spot and go confirm all dive details. Fossil diving will be done on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These are full day charters and you won’t be back into the docks till around 4pm. On Monday, two final dives are scheduled but this time to sharks and shipwrecks. What a great way to finish up the trip. Check out from the condo is on Tuesday morning. Charter: We will once again use Capt. Keith from Jet Lag Charters. Keith has run trips to the ledges for years. He has a long history of success. We have reserved his newest and largest boat for this trip but it only holds six divers. Boat rides will be long so come prepared, especially if you’re prone to seasickness. The exact dive location is kept secret but you can expect to go about 20 miles offshore. Treasure Hunting: In total, six fossil dives are scheduled. You must be Nitrox certified and comfortable at depths of 70-120ft of water. The boat will anchor onto a submerged ocean shelf, then all six divers will descend to the bottom. You’ll use a reel and strobe to section off your survey site. Two devices will greatly assist in your search of fossils. The first is a ping pong paddle. Use it to fan the sand off the ocean bottom to uncover teeth. The second and far more efficient device is using an underwater scooter instead. You’re not riding on the scooter, rather flipping it around to use it as a blower. It’s perfect. Condo: Hotels in the area are overpriced and lacking amenities. So, for this year, we have rented a 3 bedroom condo. This saves you money on the trip cost and also on eating out. The condo has three bedrooms and two baths. Two of the bedrooms have a queen bed and the other has two twin beds. The living room couch also pulls out into a sleeper. The unit can sleep 6 people comfortably. Amenities include a wet bar, full kitchen, dining area, washer/dryer and living room with flat screen TV. The deck overlooks Joyner’s Marina and the Intercostal waterway. There is also a private walkway to the beach. You can also enjoy the swimming pool, tennis courts, grills and picnic tables. The unit is just minutes from the dive boat. Only 6 Spaces - Max! What’s a Megalodon:
The Megalodon or Megatooth was a giant shark that lived between 5 million - 1.6 million years ago. The Megalodon is known only from fossil teeth, which are similar to great white shark teeth. Some estimates of this creature's size range up to 80 feet. Some people dispute the age of some recovered teeth, saying they date back only 10,000 - 15,000 years ago, making the species' extinction more recent. This has spurred an array of cheesy movies of megalodons rising from the depths to terrorize mankind. Basic Requirements
Because of the depth and workload, divers are asked to have the following requirements:
