RESCUE DIVER 101
Even one dive accident is too many. That is our attitude and it should be yours. If so, NAUI's Rescue Diver course is a must.
This class approaches dive accidents and incidences on several levels
- How to handle an in-water emergency
- How to spot small problems and stop them before things gets out of hand
- How improve your own skills so that you won't cause or be the accident.
You will learn and perform specialized skills and that are integral to successful rescue. How do you confront a panicked diver underwater without putting yourself at risk? How do you rescue a responsive and/or unresponsive victim? These are just a few of the skills you will practice.
Rescue Diver will equip you with the knowledge in an array of academic subjects, physics, physiology and geography. Why is it important to readdress these basic subjects? Because, it gives you a basis of understanding of where, when and why dive problems arise. It is far better to spot the problem on the surface before the diver is in the water than to have to assist that person later. With a deeper understanding, undesirable outcomes can be avoided.
Finally, avoid becoming the problem! Rescue training is a chance to practice and fine-tune your own skills. As with any skill, infrequent or sloppy application results in a wide range of problems. Simple skills that were once second nature, like recovering a lost mask and clearing it, will atrophy without practice. What was simple is now problematic.
Statistically, incidences of diving accidents are low, but this does little to console injured victims or their loved ones. With luck, training and practice “Zero Accident” can be a goal. Diving will always entail some risk but Rescue Diver will help minimize them.
