Nitrox Certification
“What's wrong with diving on air?' you may ask. Nothing really, we've done it for years. However, Nitrox or Enriched Air does offer significant advantages for certain dive profiles. First, let's explain what Nitrox is. It is where oxygen is added to a regular tank of air.
Nitrox is beneficial on trips where you expect to do a lot of diving, say 3-5 dives/day. It allows you longer dive times and shorter surface intervals. How? As you learned in basic scuba classes, it is the nitrogen that causes decompression sickness. By adding more oxygen to a tank of air, the amount of nitrogen is lessened. Again, since you're now absorbing less nitrogen during the dive, you can stay longer.
There's a second way to use Nitrox. Many people choose to use this gas without extending their dive time. They stay within regular dive tables or computers time limits and by doing so; add an additional level of conservatism. Since, we're become an aging population, diving Nitrox can be a wise choice.
So, what does it take to become certified? It is a three session course with two “training” dives using Nitrox tanks. During the class, you'll learn how to determine the optimal mix for a dive, and then apply oxygen exposure limits, and calculate maximum operating depths. You'll also learn how to analysis the gas blends in a tank.
