Ice Diving Certification - You have got to be kidding me!
That's the usual response we get from people when discussing the thrill of exploring our watery depths under a sheet of ice. But yes, it is thrilling and totally unique.
Each year, we have dozens of hardy (and willing) divers who visit Gull Lake in its most extreme condition, frozen. It's a little eerie, a little intimidating and, needless-to-say, a little cold. But with proper training and proper thermal protection, completing an ice dive is a memorable and enjoyable experience. Certification is necessary to participate in an ice dive but the class is not time intensive. The classroom portion is completed in one evening. The certification dive is done on a Saturday. Although it's only Gull Lake , the view is quite unique. Take time during the dive to stop and study the light refraction through the ice. It's surprisingly bright underwater; dive lights are not necessary. Visibility is much better without boat traffic or algae blooms to murk up the water. It is also a good opportunity to actually see the bottom contour of Gull Lake with all of its “treasurer” i.e. sunken boats, swing set, platform, u/w dome, etc. Next, try your hand at walking upside down on the ice surface/floor.
