Lake Michigan Dive – Rockaway in South Haven
Date: June 30th and September 15th
The Rockaway is located just off of South Haven. She was a scow schooner, considered a workhorse of the Great Lakes. She was built in 1866, most of her sailing life was spent carrying grain, wood products, coal, salt, produce, and later, lumber. On November 19, 1891, the Rockaway encountered a fierce autumn storm while transporting a load of lumber from Ludington to Benton Harbor, Michigan. The captain, first mate and crew of four stayed with the stricken vessel until it became waterlogged. All six were rescued just before the ship sank to the bottom, 2.5 miles northwest of South Haven. Today, the wreck is a subject in the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven where six seasons of archaeological fieldwork was administered. This wreck is very broken up but an interesting exploration when you study the work at the museum.
