Grand Cayman
Date: February 4 – 11, 2012
Grand Cayman is famous for gin clear waters, colourful fish and the friendliest Southern Stingrays in the world. That is just a few of the reasons why we booked it for this year’s winter escape destination.
A directly flight out of Detroit will whisk you away from snowy Michigan and into sunny Grand Cayman where the average temperature is 80’F. For the next week, you’ll roll out of bed and onto a waiting dive boat. We’ll be diving with Ocean Frontiers who offers full ‘Dive Valet’ services. Never touch your equipment once you arrive. They take care of everything, gear storage, handling, rinsing and even set up if you’re comfortable with that. Each boat has a fresh water shower, rinse tank and a separate rinse tank for cameras, a camera table, drinking water, refreshments and fresh towels.
Cayman Islands have strict marine conservation laws to protect the underwater environment. Within a short boat ride, you can reach many of the 55 buoyed dive sites, including the legendary Jack McKenny’s Canyons. This is one of East End’s famous dive sites. Here, coral and canyons and sand chutes lead you thorough into pristine deep blue waters of the outer reef before plunging to 6,000ft. These exhilarating walls are covered with brightly hued sponges, corals and sea fans.
The water clarity is second to none and it is said that more underwater photographs are taken in the Cayman Islands than in all other Caribbean destinations. Caymans’ trademark turtles are common sight as well as eagle rays, angelfish, reef sharks and grouper. Optional dives can be arranged to Stingray City, where some 30 to 40 gentle Southern Stingrays swimming freely in shallow water. The newest draw is the Kittiwake wreck, a Chanticleer Class Submarine Rescue Ship, sank in 2011. You can easily explore her five levels and two bridges as she sits in 15-65ft of water.
Accommodations are at Compass Point Dive Resort on the east end of the island. Away from the hustle and bustle of the cruise ships and tourist, you’ll find this location a perfect place to relax. This dive resort has 28 one, two and three bedroom oceanfront and poolside condominiums, each with their own private patio or balcony. Each condominium is appointed with stylish island décor and is fully equipped with all of the comforts of home.
